Tinder and evolutionary psychology: The science behind what men and women swipe for, and why
Over the last 25 years, a large amount of research has been dedicated to identifying men’s preferences for women’s physical features, and the evolutionary benefits associated with such preferences. Today, this area of research generates substantial controversy and criticism. I argue that part of the crisis is due to inaccuracies in the evolutionary hypotheses used in the field. For this review, I focus on the extensive literature regarding men’s adaptive preferences for women’s waist-to-hip ratio WHR , which has become a classic example of the just-so storytelling contributing to the general mistrust toward evolutionary explanations of human behavior. The issues in this literature originate in the vagueness and incompleteness of the theorizing of the evolutionary mechanisms leading to mate preferences. Authors seem to have rushed into testing and debating the effects of WHR on women’s attractiveness under various conditions and using different stimuli, without first establishing a clear definitions of the central evolution concepts e.

In , after years of scientific investigation, Darwin publicly introduced his revolutionary theory of evolution in a letter read at a meeting of the Linnean Society.
Geologist Ralph Harvey and historian Mott Greene explain the principles of radiometric dating and its application in determining the age of Earth. As the uranium in rocks decays, it emits subatomic particles and turns into lead at a constant rate. Measuring the uranium-to-lead ratios in the oldest rocks on Earth gave scientists an estimated age of the planet of 4. Segment from A Science Odyssey: “Origins. View in: QuickTime RealPlayer.
Radiometric Dating: Geologists have calculated the age of Earth at 4. But for humans whose life span rarely reaches more than years, how can we be so sure of that ancient date? It turns out the answers are in Earth’s rocks. Even the Greeks and Romans realized that layers of sediment in rock signified old age. But it wasn’t until the late s — when Scottish geologist James Hutton, who observed sediments building up on the landscape, set out to show that rocks were time clocks — that serious scientific interest in geological age began.
Before then, the Bible had provided the only estimate for the age of the world: about 6, years, with Genesis as the history book. Hutton’s theories were short on evidence at first, but by most scientists concurred that Noah’s ark was more allegory than reality as they documented geological layering. Using fossils as guides, they began to piece together a crude history of Earth, but it was an imperfect history.

From Tinder to Grindr, hooking up to settling down, the options for finding love or at least sex seem limitless and overwhelming. But by applying a bit of game theory — where mathematics is used to understand interactions between independent decision makers — we may be able to think through our choices in a clearer, or at least more logical, way. The strategies that we adopt in our real-life relationships can be explained, according to game theorists, by computer models that predict how to get the most from your interactions with others.
By counting the generations of the Bible and adding them to modern history, he fixed the date of creation at October 23, B.C. During Ussher’s lifetime.
Paleontologists have recovered and studied the fossil remains of many thousands of organisms that lived in the past. This fossil record shows that many kinds of extinct organisms were very different in form from any now living. It also shows successions of organisms through time see faunal succession, law of ; geochronology: Determining the relationships of fossils with rock strata , manifesting their transition from one form to another. When an organism dies, it is usually destroyed by other forms of life and by weathering processes.
On rare occasions some body parts—particularly hard ones such as shells, teeth, or bones—are preserved by being buried in mud or protected in some other way from predators and weather. Eventually, they may become petrified and preserved indefinitely with the rocks in which they are embedded. Methods such as radiometric dating —measuring the amounts of natural radioactive atoms that remain in certain minerals to determine the elapsed time since they were constituted—make it possible to estimate the time period when the rocks, and the fossils associated with them, were formed.
Radiometric dating indicates that Earth was formed about 4. The earliest fossils resemble microorganisms such as bacteria and cyanobacteria blue-green algae ; the oldest of these fossils appear in rocks 3. The oldest known animal fossils, about million years old, come from the so-called Ediacara fauna , small wormlike creatures with soft bodies. Numerous fossils belonging to many living phyla and exhibiting mineralized skeletons appear in rocks about million years old.
These organisms are different from organisms living now and from those living at intervening times. Some are so radically different that paleontologists have created new phyla in order to classify them. See Cambrian Period.

Scientists have proved one of Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution for the first time — nearly years after his death. Laura van Holstein, a PhD student in Biological Anthropology at St John’s College, University of Cambridge, and lead author of the research published today March 18 in Proceedings of the Royal Society , discovered mammal subspecies play a more important role in evolution than previously thought. Her research could now be used to predict which species conservationists should focus on protecting to stop them becoming endangered or extinct.
A species is a group of animals that can interbreed freely amongst themselves.
We did have an extremely powerful tool: evolutionary theory. Understanding evolution helped us to make educated guesses about how the virus might have.
Evolution , theory in biology postulating that the various types of plants, animals, and other living things on Earth have their origin in other preexisting types and that the distinguishable differences are due to modifications in successive generations. The theory of evolution is one of the fundamental keystones of modern biological theory. The diversity of the living world is staggering. More than 2 million existing species of organisms have been named and described; many more remain to be discovered—from 10 million to 30 million, according to some estimates.
The virtually infinite variations on life are the fruit of the evolutionary process. All living creatures are related by descent from common ancestors. Humans and other mammals descend from shrewlike creatures that lived more than million years ago; mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes share as ancestors aquatic worms that lived million years ago; and all plants and animals derive from bacteria-like microorganisms that originated more than 3 billion years ago.
The History of Evolutionary Theory
He devoted his youth to his work and in his 30s decided to marry his cousin. Instead, the piece is about sex differences and a batch of newer studies suggesting men and women are more alike than scientists had assumed — especially when it comes to promiscuity and pickiness. This should have been a great story.

If we apply the evolutionary theory to the way people use Tinder, we find that differences emerge because the traits that are sought by men and women are quite different, especially in short-term relationships. If Shakespeare were alive right now, he would definitely approve of Tinder. He would definitely have a thing or two to say about young people using Tinder for fun. In the s, 40 percent of couples in the US met through friends, and about 20 percent met in bars, in , 10 percent had met their partners on the internet, and by about 25 percent had.
Between and , more than one-third of couples who got married in the US met through online dating sites. Online dating is also picking up in urban India, with a majority preferring it over other means to find partners. India is expected to be one of the fastest growing markets for online dating apps like Tinder, which launched in India in
Tinder And Evolutionary Psychology
Author contributions: P. However, reported preferences need not correspond to actual mate choices, which are more relevant from an evolutionary perspective. In a study of 46 adults participating in a speed-dating event, we were largely able to replicate Buston and Emlen’s self-report results in a pre-event questionnaire, but we found that the stated preferences did not predict actual choices made during the speed-dates.
Instead, men chose women based on their physical attractiveness, whereas women, who were generally much more discriminating than men, chose men whose overall desirability as a mate matched the women’s self-perceived physical attractiveness. Unlike the cognitive processes that Buston and Emlen inferred from self-reports, this pattern of results from actual mate choices is very much in line with the evolutionary predictions of parental investment theory.
What characteristics are preferable in a human mate?
EP draws on evolutionary theory and inter-species comparisons. Inferior has not been reviewed in scientific journals to date, but was praised.
Her job involves incorporating theory and academic research into customer analysis, building a conceptual framework for insights into online consumer behavior. The counter-intuitive truth is that Tinder actually provides users with all the information they need to make an informed first impression about a potential long-term mate. And it does so by matching our human evolutionary mechanism.
Although we always ascribe our decisions to a rational, conscious-brain motivation, this supposed motivation is never the entire reason for our decisions; in fact, it often has nothing to do with it! We like to think of ourselves as rational human beings that base our decisions on logical processes, but most of our decisions occur unconsciously and based on minimal information.
Tinder exposes its users to two types of factors: rational Geographical Distance and Age and emotional Appearance and Requited Interest. Each of these factors makes a unique contribution to the decision making process. Geographical Distance — Research shows that the best single predictor of whether two people will develop a relationship is how far apart they live. People are more likely to develop friendships with people who are nearby ex.
An examination of marriage license applications in Philadelphia found that one third of the couples lived within five blocks of each other. Thus, geographical distance is a powerful predictor of the likelihood that two people will end up together. Age — People with little or no age difference have significantly more in common than those with a larger age difference. When two people are the same age, they are generally at a similar stage in life, both psychologically and physically.
These similarities make it easier to find common conversational ground, and add an element of cohesiveness to a relationship that cannot be attained in relationships with a more notable age difference.
Evidence for evolution
Charles Darwin is more famous than his contemporary Alfred Russel Wallace who also developed the theory of evolution by natural selection. Ideas aimed at explaining how organisms change, or evolve, over time date back to Anaximander of Miletus, a Greek philosopher who lived in the s B. Noting that human babies are born helpless, Anaximander speculated that humans must have descended from some other type of creature whose young could survive without any help.
He concluded that those ancestors must be fish, since fish hatch from eggs and immediately begin living with no help from their parents. From this reasoning, he proposed that all life began in the sea. Anaximander was correct; humans can indeed trace our ancestry back to fish.
The theory of evolution is supported by instances of direct observation, the existence of previously living organisms or their traces, dating from the distant past.
Fossils tell us when organisms lived, as well as provide evidence for the progression and evolution of life on earth over millions of years. Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the past. Fossils range in age from 10, to 3. The observation that certain fossils were associated with certain rock strata led 19th century geologists to recognize a geological timescale.
Like extant organisms, fossils vary in size from microscopic, like single-celled bacteria, to gigantic, like dinosaurs and trees. Permineralization is a process of fossilization that occurs when an organism is buried. The empty spaces within an organism spaces filled with liquid or gas during life become filled with mineral-rich groundwater. Minerals precipitate from the groundwater, occupying the empty spaces.
This process can occur in very small spaces, such as within the cell wall of a plant cell. Small-scale permineralization can produce very detailed fossils. For permineralization to occur, the organism must be covered by sediment soon after death, or soon after the initial decay process. The degree to which the remains are decayed when covered determines the later details of the fossil.
